Translating John 1:30
Here is the Greek, and how various translations have rendered it in English.

RSV:
This is he of whom I said,
'After me comes a man
who ranks before me,
for he was before me.'

NRSV:
This is he of whom I said,
'After me comes a man
who ranks ahead of me,
because he was before me.'

NEB:
This is he of whom I spoke when I said,
"after me a man is coming
who takes rank before me";
for before I was born, he already was.

NJB:
It was of him that I said,
"Behind me comes one
who has passed ahead of me
because he existed before me."

TEV:
This is the one I was talking about when I said,
'A man is coming after me,
but he is greater than I am,
because he existed before I was born.'

REBrown, the Gospel of John, Anchor Bible:
"It is he about whom I said,
'After me is to come a man
who ranks ahead of me,
for he existed before me.'
