Cape Driven

I'm driving up a peninsula road
between ominous rows of beachfront homes.
Weather-beaten, sun-faded colors,
denied the ocean's sight
imprisoned between
endless embankments
of private sand.
Owned grass bends
in the oxides of civilization.

I dare not stop
anxious traffic herds me forward
hurtling towards the vanishing point.

I snatch stares at the sky
and dream of the sea's embrace
beyond the asphalt's end.
