The Hebrew word for "Judge" is "shaphat" {shaw-fat'}

Judges is a book about decline: about what happens when the chosen people choose other gods and behave badly. Far from endorsing abuse of women and children, the books shows that such abuse occurs when God is not followed.

There are 19 women named or referred to in Judges (by one count) and ten have speaking parts, a very high number for a biblical book. However, some of their stories are not exactly positive - or seem that way on the surface.
